Applications of Barrels and Screws

The barrel and screw assembly constitutes the core component of plastic processing machinery (such as injection molding machines and extruders). Its primary function is to convey, compact, melt, mix, and pressurize plastic raw materials, thereby directly determining the plasticization quality and production efficiency of the final product.

Core Functions and Working Principles
The barrel and screw work in tandem; the screw rotates within the barrel, converting solid plastic into a molten state through a combination of frictional heat generation and external heating.

Conveying and Compacting: The rotation of the screw propels the plastic forward from the hopper, gradually compacting it during the process.
Melting and Mixing: By utilizing the shear and compressive forces generated by the changing volume of the screw channels-in conjunction with external heating applied to the barrel-the plastic is uniformly melted and mixed.
Metering and Pressurizing: The metering section ensures the stability of the melt's temperature and pressure, ultimately delivering a precise quantity of molten plastic into a mold (for injection molding) or through a die (for extrusion molding).

Primary Application Fields
Barrel and screw assemblies are widely utilized across various types of plastic molding equipment, as well as in certain sectors of the food processing industry:

Injection Molding: Used for the production of a diverse range of plastic products, including daily necessities, automotive components, electronic enclosures, and more. The screw design must be adapted to suit the specific characteristics of different plastics (e.g., a gradual-transition screw for PVC, or an abrupt-transition screw for polyolefins).
Extrusion Molding: Used for manufacturing plastic profiles, pipes, sheets, and films. The barrel and screw assembly ensures the continuous and uniform extrusion of raw materials.
Food Processing: Twin-screw configurations are frequently employed in the production of puffed snacks, pet food, and aquatic feeds, utilizing high temperatures and high pressures to gelatinize and expand the raw materials.
